The first of likely many follow-ups.
"Conversate" is not a word. Converse is, and conversation.
"Healthful" is dumb. We all used "healthy" for everything all this time just fine.
I don't really pray, but for those of you who do, don't say you pray "over" something or someone, unless you are physically standing over them or it and praying.
Can't believe I forgot this one in my o.p.: "agreeance." IT'S NOT A WORD! It's used by people so weak that "agreement" is too harsh. Stupid.
Accept and except. Learn the difference. Likewise counsel and council, capitol and capital.
You've hit a lot of my pet peeves too!
ReplyDeleteHow about "irregardless"? Technically a word now from several years of people commonly misusing it, but still...
Good one, Riley! That's a terrible word that just won't seem to go away.
ReplyDeleteHere's another: remember when "disrespect" was just a noun? It's used almost exclusively as a verb anymore.
Here's yet another; a turn of phrase though, rather than a term, used by some adults (like Tony Kornheiser) when referring to something they do or did since they were young: "I've been going there since I'm 10." Really? You HAVE BEEN doing something (past tense) since you ARE (present tense) 10? I hear some adults speak in this way, and I find it very annoying.
There are so many mis-applications of the English language that make me raise an eyebrow... but it's rude to keep correcting people.
ReplyDeleteSo I just laugh at them on the inside.
Or, we can just poke fun at them on our blogs. :)
